Into the highlands– Exploring the dovrefjell region

Northern muskox in winter mountains, natural winter habitat with snow, Dovrefjell National

📅 When: 4–7 September 2025
📍 Where: Dovrefjell National Park and surroundings
👥 Who: Maximum 25 participants

Thursday, 4 September

We will depart from Lilleammer in minibuses at 16:00 and head north toward Hjerkinn—a scenic journey of about three hours with stops. Along the way, we’ll travel through Gudbrandsdalen, a historic valley known for its Stone Age rock art, mountain farms, and the famed Pilgrim Path from Oslo to Trondheim. The E6 road takes us between the majestic mountain ranges of Jotunheimen and Rondane, leading us into the heart of Dovrefjell. In the evening, we’ll check in at the charming and historic Kongsvold Fjeldstue, where we’ll enjoy a shared dinner and a peaceful night’s rest in the mountains.

Friday, 5 September

After breakfast, we’ll take a short drive to the Visitor Centre Wild Reindeer, where a guide will lead us on a 30-minute hike to the Snøhetta viewpoint. From this panoramic vantage point, we’ll look out over the eastern parts of Dovrefjell National Park—a landscape home to wild reindeer and the muskox. Back at the visitor centre, we’ll learn about Norway’s arctic fox breeding program, followed by a visit to the breeding station (approximately 30 minutes away) to meet the foxes and hear about ongoing conservation efforts. After a full day of wildlife and mountain experiences, we’ll return to Kongsvold Fjeldstue for a hearty dinner and a relaxed evening.

Saturday, 6 September

Today is our chance to possibly spot a muskox in the wild! We’ll set out on the Muskox Trail, starting right at Kongsvold. Participants can choose between:

  • A short circular route (~4.5 km)

  • A longer hike (~8.1 km) with pickup at the end

For those who prefer a slower pace, you’re welcome to spend more time relaxing at Kongsvold or revisiting the Wild Reindeer Visitor Centre. After lunch, we’ll regroup and drive east through Rondane National Park, eventually arriving at Campus Evenstad—home of the University of Inland Norway’s wildlife programs. There, we’ll join all other excursion groups for a festive farewell dinner and celebration to close the congress together. That night, accommodation will be arranged in a comfortable hotel in nearby Koppang.

Sunday, 7 September

On Sunday morning, it’s time to say goodbye. We will organize transportation to Hamar, where you can catch a train to Oslo or Oslo Airport. If you’d like to extend your stay, you’re welcome to explore Koppang and its surroundings—there are afternoon train connections available from Koppang to Oslo.
